This week’s installment of something I’ve never done before includes my reviews for new shows including Once Upon a Time, Pan Am and Terra Nova. I’m going to start with Once Upon a Time because it aired last night.
Once Upon a Time started out very strong last night. There were moments that made me question if the “reality parts” were going to be successful. These include *spoiler alert* the main character Emma’s job as a bounty hunter who works alone. Are we supposed to believe a skinny blonde, in five inch heels can beat a guy into his steering wheel with one arm? No, we don’t believe that television.
We can however believe in a fantasy world where anything can happen. I’ll tell you why, because it’s a fantasy world. It’s not our world. I’m all for the suspension of disbelief, but I cannot and will not suspend my belief to believe a female bounty hunter would wear a skin tight, short red dress to catch a married, male perp.
I think Once Upon a Time is heading in the right direction besides that snafu right in the beginning. The fantasy elements are fun, dramatic and involve many beautiful sets and CGI effects. I’m definitely DVR’ing this in the hopes that it doesn’t disappoint me in the long run. I’m a huge LOST fan, so I have faith this show has some great writers working for it.
Hey, Pan Am, I call bullshit! Pan Am begins in the early 1960’s, which many of us know as a time period where America was at a crossroads with a number of different things. They are standing on the brink of the Civil Rights Movement, the Cuban Missile Crisis and more. Anyone who has watched the popular television series, Mad Men will understand what I’m talking about.
|These Did Not Exist Then|
Now, people smoked on planes A LOT. Stewardesses smoked. Everybody smoked cigarettes. It’s disgusting to imagine that many people smoking, but it also points out why people today still smoke. It is an element of the time. In that show it's like no one smokes....
I’ve tried to like this show but there are other things that are so untrue of the time period. First off, who wants to watch a bunch of privileged white people be so super awesome, positive and successful even when things get rough? I don’t! I’d never want to see that. The next thing they’re going to try to tell me is that not a single one of those stewardesses or pilots was racist. Guess what, they were at least 75% racist. That’s the reality of the time back then. Show some of that.
No…ABC just wants us to believe that the early 1960’s were a better time, where a blonde, white woman could do something different with her life by becoming a flight attendant and traveling around the world. . . *ahem* what? First off the same five chicks and three pilots would not be on every flight together and they’d have dedicated routes. But, for the sake of television of course they’d all need to be together. This part I understand and won’t complain about too much.
I love you Christina Ricci, but this show does not play to your talents. And did anyone catch the Bunny Slippers segment on E!’s The Soup Friday? Unfortunately I couldn't find the video myself.
Terra Nova – Where were the dinosaurs last week? There is some kind of weird fued going on between Terra Nova and the sixers… Also, there are never any dino’s outside the compound but on the first episode they were letting long necks reach over their wall and nearly eat little children… “They’re our giant, sensitive friends." <-- Not a real quote. Also, what family behaves like the stars of this show? I love dinosaurs... I also love imagining dinosaurs tearing apart the entire cast.
|But, this guys still pretty hot!|
Overall, I am not going to say much about Terra Nova because I think we can all agree it’s complete shit.
